Postdoctoral Fellow in Machine Learning @ University of Toronto & University of Amsterdam

We are seeking a highly creative and motivated postdoctoral fellow to work jointly with two research groups: Richard Zemel, at the University of Toronto and Max Welling at the University of Amsterdam.   • Phd Position in “Multi View Deep Learning” – University of Amsterdam (Announcement date: 5 October 2015)

We often have information about the objects we wish to recognize from multiple views. This can be an object imaged from different viewpoints, or it can be multimodal data (e.g. text and image) about an object. In this project we will develop novel deep learning technology to maximally use all available viewpoints of an object to improve recognition performance. This will be applied to medical imaging (i.e. multiple scans of a patient, combined imaging and genetic data of a patients) and to the recognition of vehicles from images or video made with different devices at different points in time. The modeling will focus on incorporating multimodal information, viewpoint transformations and invariances into the deep architecture in order to improve the recognition performance.

Job description:

The University of Amsterdam has a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher. The aim of the project is to develop deep convolutional neural network (CNN) analysis of neuroimaging data to enable neuroimaging biomarker development. Neuroimaging data consist of thousands of features but the training of convolutional networks is typically hampered by limited samples. You will use large existing datasets for the development of CNN analysis and test the resulting models in smaller samples to develop neuroimaging biomarkers that are predictive of treatment outcome in patients with psychiatric disorders. You will closely collaborate with experts in CNN and computer vision in the deep learning group of Prof. Max Welling (UvA) as well as with experts in neuroimaging and psychiatry in the group of Dr. Guido van Wingen (AMC-UvA). Key objectives include the construction of networks that are invariant to differences in MRI data acquisition, accommodate classification on multiple data modalities, test the networks with supervised and unsupervised problems, and develop software for end-users. This project is funded by a Vidi grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO/ZonMW).

Requirements:

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow with a (nearly completed) PhD in computer science, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or related discipline. You have a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and (GPU) programming (e.g., Linux, C++, Python, Cuda, Matlab), and have experience with machine learning, pattern analysis, and/or medical image analysis. Project description
Deep learning has been very successful in a number of areas (e.g., computer vision, speech processing and natural language processing). However, there has been little work on developing deep learning methods for predictive analysis of complex network data (e.g., social networks, trading networks etc.). This project fills this gap and focuses on statistical modelling of information exchange in transaction networks. In this work we will use very large amounts of real data from a trading network (an industrial partner) but the methods will generalize to other types of networks where heterogeneous data is being exchanged (e.g., social networks). We will be developing predictive algorithms relying on the flow of transactions in the network (e.g., various types of recommendations as well as detection of novel and significant events). We also seek to cluster the businesses trading over the networks as well as the products that are being traded. As information in these networks mostly comes in a textual form, we will develop methods for inducing predictive semantics representations of texts relying both on the text itself but also on the flow of information in the network.

There are 2 PhD vacancies within this project:

  • PhD1 will focus primarily on clustering and predictive modelling (affiliated with IvI, supervised by Prof. Max Welling)
  • PhD2 will focus primarily on natural language processing (affiliated with ILLC. supervised by Dr. Ivan Titov)

Close collaboration between the two PhD students is envisaged. The PhD candidates will be expected to fulfil the following tasks:

  • complete and defend a PhD thesis within the official appointment duration of four years;

    D-Wave is building hardware with the goal of computing as fast as nature will allow. We’re working hard on exploiting quantum resources which are known to offer large computational speedups on some problems. The D-Wave adiabatic quantum computer is able to sample from probability distributions and optimize functions that are computationally intractable using classical hardware. When viewed as a sampler, the native operation of the D-Wave machine is analogous to a sparsely-connected restricted Boltzmann machine. Similar network dynamics have fueled the recent explosion in the field of deep learning, the results of which are presently deployed in products ranging from speech recognition to image search. The D-Wave applications research team is working to exploit the parallels between these architectures to substantially accelerate learning in deep, hierarchical neural networks.

The job will involve working closely with a team of machine learning and quantum computation experts to implement novel machine learning algorithms that leverage the power of the D-Wave quantum computer. Job / Project Description: Deep Learning for Big Data Analysis in Astronomy.
With an estimated Exabyte of data per day in 2024, the new “Square Kilometer Array” radio telescope will be one of the largest generators of big data ever. In this project we will train deep neural networks to reconstruct the image of radio sources from the sparse (Fourier transformed) data received at the telescopes. We will use “Stochastic Variational Bayesian” learning to jointly train the encoding network (observations to sources) as well as the generative network (sources to observations). Models will be trained from simulator data as well as from real observations. A major challenge will be to develop deep learning algorithms that can handle the enormous amounts of data generated by these telescopes and reconstruct the sources efficiently and accurately.
The PhD student will be conducting research in the area of machine learning on the topic described above. In addition s/he may have some teaching duties as a teaching assistant. The PhD student will be directly supervised by Prof. Dr. M. Welling.

Institution:
The research group Machine Learning & Autonomous Intelligent Systems of IvI conducts research in the area of large scale modeling of complex data sources. This includes the development of new methods for probabilistic graphical models and nonparametric Bayesian models, the development of faster (approximate) inference and learning methods, deep learning, causal inference, reinforcement learning and multi-agent systems and the application of all of the above to large scale data domains in science and industry (“Big Data problems”). The Machine Learning and Autonomous Intelligent Systems group is embedded in the Intelligent Systems Lab Amsterdam (ISLA). ISLA conducts research in sensory information processing and autonomous systems. It produces theoretically as well as applied research. ISLA has an outstanding group of researchers and collaborates with national and international research institutes and companies.
Requirements
Candidates are required to have a master’s degree in mathematics, statistics or physics (preferably with a specialization in computational methods) or computer science (preferably with a specialization in artificial intelligence and/or machine learning).
Necessary qualifications for candidates include excellent grades, proven research talent, affinity with computational statistics or machine learning and excellent programming skills.

Appointment

  • Postdoc position in machine/biological vision – Serre lab, Brown University (Providence, RI)
     The computational vision research group, headed by Dr. Thomas Serre at Brown University, has an opening for a postdoctoral fellow to work at the interface between computational neuroscience and computer vision. In particular, we are looking for computer scientists interested in the development of novel machine learning / computer vision algorithms derived from high-fidelity representations of cortical microcircuits to achieve human-like performance on complex information processing tasks.
